What is Alternative Maritime Power (AMP)?
Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) is a shore-to-ship electrical power system that allows a vessel to connect to a port's electrical supply while berthed. Once the shore connection is established, the vessel can transfer its electrical load from onboard generators to the shore power supply.
This enables the vessel's generators to be shut down during the berthing period, helping reduce emissions as well as noise and vibration associated with generator operation.
AMP, also referred to as Cold Ironing, is increasingly becoming relevant as ports, maritime authorities and regulatory frameworks introduce stricter environmental and emission requirements.
